Focus Area 7.1- Meet professional ethics and responsibilities.
Throughout all of my teaching practicums I have presented myself in a professional manner and have referred to the NSW Code of Conduct for teachers. Attached is the NSW Code of Conduct which highlights how teachers must conduct themselves in the workplace. Although I am only a beginning teacher I have familiarised myself with these codes and now understand what is expected of me in the teaching profession.
The NSW Code of Conduct is based on the principles 'fairness, respect, integrity and responsibility.' I acknowledge these codes and understand that when I am in a teaching position it is vital that I follow this codes at all times. Focus Area 7.2- Comply with legislative, administrative and organisational requirements.
On my last teaching practicum I organised and attended a range of excursions with my students. For one double lesson I arranged an excursion for my year eight class to walk around the town and take pictures of key icons that would then be used to make a tourism brochure for their topic on tourism. In order to take them on an excursion I had to comply with legislative, administrative and organisational policies. Below is a scanned copy of the administrative form that I had to complete to undertake and excursion with my students. I had to talk to the head teacher about the excursion, seek his approval and get his signature, liaise with the deputy principal and seek his approval and signature. After these steps I had to check for student medical conditions such as a disability or allergy. I had to print out the class list along with a photocopied excursion note (see below) and hand two to the front office, one to the deputy principal and one to the head teacher. Before the excursion I also had to make sure that we had a first aid kit.
Engage with the parents/ carers.
On my final teaching practicum I was involved with the parent teacher interview night for years 7-10. Below is a practicum report comment from my mentor teacher which supports my involvement in the process. (To view my whole practicum report click on the practicum comment below)
Engage with professional teaching networks.
I engaged in a variety of teaching communities which helped improve my professional knowledge and practice. At my current University, I always engage in postings on our 'moodle' sections about issues in relation to teaching. Furthermore, I have a range of teaching blogs that I follow which engage in different topics regard teaching and the use of ICT in the classroom. Below are some links to blogs dedicated to teaching which I follow. In the future I hope to be involved in a greater number of communities to improve my professional development and practice.
