Focus Area 2.1-Content and teaching strategies of the teaching area.Throughout standards 2, 3 and 5 I will be using a year 11 unit of work for a Society and Culture class to demonstrate how I have met each focus area.
In this unit of work I engaged my students by teaching the students interesting and relevant content in a variety of ways. Subsequently through a variety of teaching strategies my students were engaged in their learning and completed this whole unit of work on time. This annotated Year 11 Society and Culture unit of work demonstrates this in more detail. My mentor teacher's comments from 2012 on my teaching practicum report also provide evidence of how I meet this focus area. Note: to view the whole practicum report click on the comments. Focus Area 2.2-Content selection and organisation.
Throughout this year 11 unit of work for my Society and Culture class I organised content into an effective learning and teaching sequence. At the beginning of this unit of work I included the title/program name, year level, the key learning outcomes, the time allocated for the course, the lessons designated, prior knowledge of students, an assessment overview, an overview of teaching strategies and the key concepts that students will know and understand by the end of this unit. After this key information the unit of work was organised through lessons which were in a sequential order. In these lesson plans I explained the teaching strategies used and the tasks students will complete. I also incorporated the curriculum outcomes- 'Students learn about', 'Students learn to' and 'Learning Outcomes'. These curriculum outcome are found in the NSW syllabus for Society and Culture. At the end of this unit of work I included a list of resources, my reflection of the unit of work and the Appendix with all of the assessment and resources I used. This annotated Year 11 Society and Culture unit of work demonstrates further, how I have met this focus area.
Focus Area 2.3-Curriculum, assessment and reporting.
When designing my lesson sequences and lesson plans in my unit of work I used appropriate knowledge of the curriculum, assessment and reporting requirements. This annotated Year 11 Society and Culture unit of work demonstrates my understanding of curriculum assessment and reporting in creating a unit of work which is essential in developing effective learning sequences and lessons. Below are pages taken from the preliminary Society and Culture syllabus. My unit of work is centered around these outcomes- which is what the NSW Government requires teachers to do when they develop lessons and units of work.

Focus Area 2.4- Understand and respect Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people to promote reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
At the University of Canberra I completed an Indigenous Education subject. This subject focused on Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people and how we as educators can understand and respect them to promote reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. My annotated Indigenous Education Assignment demonstrates this. Within my teaching practicums I used the strategies that I learnt in my Indigenous Education subject to promote Indigenous culture and reconciliation. In my year eight History class I took my students on a local Indigenous bush walk. Below are photographs of this excursion. The students enjoyed learning about Indigenous culture and history.
Focus Area 2.5-Literacy and numeracy strategies.
In this annotated year 8 Geography lesson plan I demonstrate how I understand and use literacy and numeracy strategies when teaching. This is the PowerPoint presentation I used as a resource in this lesson. Below are the PowerPoint slides which demonstrate the activities my students completed which used literacy and numeracy skills in this lesson. Students had to use literacy skills by writing their own definition of tourism. They also used their literacy skills in group work as they had to write down why people travel. My students demonstrated their numeracy skills by calculating the difference between tourist visits per country in 2011 and 2012. Although this lesson illustrates how I have incorporated literacy and numeracy skills into my lessons, I feel as though I need to improve my literacy and numeracy strategies in the classroom. At the moment I am currently completinga subject at UNI which is centered around literacy strategies. After the completion of this course this semester I will have a deeper understanding of literacy strategies and how I can use them when teaching.
Focus Area 2.6- Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
Throughout my teaching practicum I consistently used ICT as a resource to expand my students learning. In my year 11 Society and Culture class I created a lesson centred around the use of ICT and research. In small groups my students selected a topic about South Korea (the list of topics were on the board). My students were then given instructions to research this topic using the internet and write approx 500 words on their selected topic. They then had to present this work on the school wiki site which I had created for them on their school moodle page. Below are screen shots which illustrate student's work.
